The Ultimate Brain-Body Reading List

When we were doing the research on the brain and exercise connection prior to the opening of Activate Brain and Body, I read several great books about the brain.  This reading helped us to shape the program that has become the “Cognitive Circuit” as well as many other aspects of Activate.  I put together a list of my top three books that discuss the profound impact of exercise on the brain.

Here is that list:

“Spark: The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain” by John J. Ratey: In this groundbreaking book, Dr. Ratey explores the transformative effects of exercise on the human brain. Through an engaging blend of scientific research and real-life stories, he demonstrates how physical activity has a profound impact on cognitive function and mental well-being. Ratey reveals how exercise stimulates the production of key neurochemicals, promoting brain plasticity and enhancing learning, attention, and mood. Moreover, he discusses how exercise can be an effective intervention for conditions like ADHD, depression, and anxiety, offering practical advice on incorporating exercise into daily life to optimize brain health and overall happiness.

“The Brain’s Way of Healing: Remarkable Discoveries and Recoveries from the Frontiers of Neuroplasticity” by Norman Doidge: In this illuminating work, Doidge delves into the world of neuroplasticity and its remarkable potential for healing. Through captivating stories of patients who have experienced extraordinary recoveries from various neurological conditions, he showcases the brain’s ability to rewire itself and adapt to challenges. Doidge explores innovative therapies and techniques that harness the brain’s plasticity to treat conditions such as chronic pain, stroke recovery, and learning disabilities. The book sheds light on the cutting-edge research and the implications of neuroplasticity for the future of medicine, inspiring hope for those seeking alternative approaches to healing.

“Healthy Brain, Happy Life: A Personal Program to Activate Your Brain and Do Everything Better” by Wendy Suzuki: Dr. Wendy Suzuki, a renowned neuroscientist, shares her insights on the link between physical exercise and cognitive function in “Healthy Brain, Happy Life.” Through personal anecdotes and scientific evidence, Suzuki explains how exercise can positively influence memory, focus, and mood. The book also delves into the neurochemistry behind exercise-induced changes in the brain, including the release of neurotransmitters that enhance cognition and emotional well-being. Dr. Suzuki offers a practical and engaging guide, encouraging readers to adopt her brain-boosting exercise regimen to achieve a healthier brain and a happier life.
