At Activate, we are very passionate about keeping both the brain and body healthy. One way that we do that is by hosting monthly events for our clients to help them build healthy social connections. Healthy social connections not only improve an individual’s mood and quality of life, it can also boost their brain power by remembering names and recalling events related to other individuals. One of my personal favorite ways to bring people together to benefit both their brains and bodies is hiking. Hiking is great for brain health because it combines physical exercise with exposure to nature, which can boost mental clarity, reduce stress, and enhance cognitive functioning. The rhythmic movement of walking helps improve blood flow to the brain, promoting neuroplasticity, a term we discuss regularly here at Activate, which is essential for memory and learning. According to a study done by the National Institute of Health (NIH) individuals who walk at least 1 mile a day, have a reduced risk of cognitive impairment by approximately 50%. Interestingly, spending time outdoors has also been shown to lower levels of anxiety and depression, while increasing overall mood. Plus, hiking in natural environments can spark creativity and improve focus, making it a holistic way to support brain health! The most recent hiking event we did at Activate, one that I had the privilege to lead, was at the Cincinnati Nature Center located in Milford, Ohio. Those who went, had a great time challenging themselves physically and meeting new members of the club. Next time you are looking for a way to challenge both your brain and your body, get outside and enjoy a hike with some friends!
